Information Event – Developments and Measures for Energy Efficiency and Energy Structure Optimization in the Non-Ferrous Metals and Steel Industry in China

June 7, 2022 @ 3:00 am - 4:45 pm

- Free

Dear Partners and Stakeholders,

As the implementing organization of the Competence Centre for Mining & Resources, AHK Greater China is very pleased to cordially invite you to our Information Event in June. Founded at the beginning of 2021, the Competence Centre, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), serves as the first and central point of contact for German companies and institutions for an engagement in the Chinese mining and resources industry.

In terms of energy consumption, manufacturing represents the largest sector of the Chinese economy with a proportion of more than 50% of final energy use. The steel and non-ferrous metals industry are particularly energy-intensive. In recent years, especially since the national targets for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality were announced in 2020, China is actively taking measures to make production processes more energy-efficient and less carbon-intensive. A series of guidelines and targets focusing on energy-intensive key sectors including steel, ferroalloys and non-ferrous metals have been released, demonstrating the Chinese government’s determination towards a low-carbon industry transition. Besides raising benchmark levels for energy efficiency, concrete targets have been announced for different sectors: For instance, by 2025, 30% of total production capacity in the steel and electrolytic aluminum sector should reach the energy efficiency benchmark level. The proportion in the copper, lead and zinc smelting industry should even rise to 50%. In contrast, the capacity below the baseline level will have to be basically removed. Moreover, optimization of energy structure through increased utilization of renewable energy is a growing trend among leading producers. Against this background, the Information Event will analyze the current transformation and measures for energy efficiency in the Chinese non-ferrous metals and steel industry, and discuss opportunities for Sino-German cooperation.

At the event, Ms. Li Dan from the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association will present latest developments regarding energy saving in the non-ferrous metals industry in China. This will be followed
by Dr. Zhang Yongjie from China Baowu Steel Group, who will share insights on the measures of the Chinese iron and steel sector to reduce energy consumption.

The meeting will be held in English and take place online via Zoom on Tuesday, June 7 th from 15:00- 16:45 (China Standard Time) / 09:00-10:45 (Central European Time).

Participants will include representatives from governmental organizations, enterprises, and further stakeholders related to the non-ferrous metals and steel industries.

The event is free of charge. For registration, please click here.

We are looking forward to your registration and active participation during the event. For any inquiries, please contact Ms. Xu Conghua (xu.conghua@china.ahk.de / Phone: +86 10 6539 6653).

Sincerely,
